What a custom China tour actually is

A trip written for you — not a seat on someone else's bus

A custom China tour is a private trip designed around your dates, your interests and your pace. Instead of picking a fixed departure and joining strangers, you tell us what matters to you and we build the route, the hotels and the days around it.

That means you can start in any city in China, travel in one direction rather than backtracking, spend three nights somewhere a group tour allows three hours, and change the plan on the second morning if the weather — or your mood — says otherwise.

Everything inside China is ours to handle: high-speed rail tickets, domestic flights, permits for the Tibetan plateau, hotel bookings, restaurant reservations, translation, mobile payment setup, a doctor if you need one. You arrive with a suitcase. We take it from there.

Who our custom trips are for

  • First-time visitors to China who want the essential route done properly, without the coach-tour crush.
  • Families who need shorter travel days, connecting rooms and something for the kids every afternoon.
  • Returning travelers who have "done" Beijing and Shanghai and want Yunnan, the Silk Road or the plateau.
  • Travellers in transit with one or two days between flights and a visa-free window.
  • Photographers, hikers and food travellers whose reasons for coming don't fit a brochure.

Why travelers choose a private custom trip over a group tour

A group tour is designed for the average of forty people. A custom trip is designed for you. That shows up in small ways — leaving for the Great Wall at 6 a.m. so you're alone on the ramparts, booking the noodle shop your guide actually eats at, staying an extra hour because nobody has to catch a bus.

It also shows up when something goes wrong. Flights get cancelled, museums close, someone gets sick. With a group you wait for the office. With us, your guide re-plans in the car and your designer is on WhatsApp within minutes.

What you can customize

Eight things you control — and we handle

Almost everything about a fixed tour is a decision someone else already made. On a custom trip, these eight are yours.

1 · Your cities

Start anywhere, skip the places that don't appeal, and add ones most itineraries never reach — Yunnan, Gansu, Guizhou, the northeast.

2 · Your pace

Two sights a day or five. Sleep in, stay late, or take a whole day off. We build the days around your energy, not a timetable.

3 · Your hotels

Boutique courtyard houses, five-star towers, family rooms, a night in a rice-terrace lodge. We book what fits your budget and taste.

4 · Your guide's language

English, Spanish or Portuguese. And a guide chosen for the trip: a historian in Xi'an, a food obsessive in Chengdu, a family guide for kids.

5 · Your food

Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, no spice, or "take us where you eat". Menus are planned ahead and checked the day before.

6 · Your activities

Cooking classes, tea picking, calligraphy, kung fu, a bike ride on the city wall, sunrise photography at the Great Wall.

7 · Your access

Tibet permits, closed-section Great Wall hikes, early-entry tickets, a table at a restaurant that doesn't take bookings.

8 · Your changes

Plans move. Add a city mid-trip, swap a hotel, shorten a day. We re-plan the same day and tell you exactly what changes.

How customization works

From a two-minute email to a day-by-day plan

No forms, no sales calls, no deposit. Just a real conversation with someone who lives in China.

Step One

Email us your outline

Dates, number of travelers, how long you have, and the three things you don't want to miss. That's enough to start — we'll ask about the rest.

Step Two

We send a first draft, free

Within 24 hours: a day-by-day itinerary, the hotels we recommend, travel times between cities, and a clear itemized price. No obligation.

Step Three

You refine, we redraft

Swap cities, add days, change hotels, slow the pace down. Unlimited revisions, still free. You approve only when it's genuinely right.

Step Four

We book everything in China

Rail, flights, hotels, tickets, permits, guides, cars, restaurants. Then we travel with you — on the ground, on WhatsApp, 24/7.

No small print

What's included — and what isn't

Most travelers ask this in their first email. Here's the straight answer, before you ask.

Included in every custom trip

  • All hotels, chosen with you and booked by us
  • Daily breakfast, and meals listed in your itinerary
  • A private licensed guide in every city, all day
  • A private vehicle and professional driver in every city
  • Airport and rail-station meet-and-greet, all transfers
  • All domestic transport: high-speed rail, flights, private cars
  • Entrance tickets to every attraction on your itinerary
  • Permits and paperwork — Tibet, closed sections, advance tickets
  • Restaurant reservations, translation, SIM and payment app setup
  • 24/7 access to your trip designer on WhatsApp while you travel

Not included

  • International flights to and from China
  • China visa fees, where a visa is required
  • Travel insurance (we strongly recommend it)
  • Meals you choose on your own, and drinks
  • Personal shopping and souvenirs
  • Optional extras you add later — spa, helicopter, a second guide
  • Gratuities for guides and drivers, at your discretion

Everything on the left is quoted in your itinerary, itemized, before you pay anything. No hidden fees on arrival, no "optional" excursions that aren't optional.

What it costs

Custom China tour prices, at a glance

Customization questions

Everything travelers ask before we start

How do I start planning a custom China tour?
Email us a short outline: your dates or rough season, how many days you have, how many travelers, and the three things you don't want to miss. That's enough. Within 24 hours you'll receive a first draft itinerary with hotels, travel times and an itemized price — free, with no obligation.
How much does a custom China tour cost?
Most of our private trips start in the low hundreds of dollars per person. An 8–10 day trip for two usually comes out between $400 and $900 per person, depending on hotel class, season and how much you travel between cities. Because prices move with the seasons, our team quotes your exact figure against your dates — see the table above for the usual range.
Can you really start the trip in any city?
Yes. We're based in China, so there's no fixed joining point. Tell us where your flight lands — Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming, Xiamen or anywhere else with an international airport — and we'll meet you there and build the route outward.
How many revisions do I get on my itinerary?
As many as you need, at no cost. Designing and redrafting your itinerary is free. You pay nothing until you approve the final plan and confirm the booking.
Can you change things while we're already traveling?
Yes, and we do it often. Your guide can adjust the day on the spot, and your trip designer will re-book hotels, trains or flights the same day if plans shift. Nothing on a custom trip is locked once you've paid.
Do you arrange travel insurance and visas?
We don't sell insurance, but we'll tell you exactly what to look for and we strongly recommend you buy it. For visas, we confirm what your passport needs, issue the invitation letter where required, and walk you through the application step by step.
What if we don't speak any Mandarin?
You won't need to. Your guide handles every conversation, from hotel check-in to pharmacy runs. We also set up translation and payment apps on your phone before you arrive, so you're never stuck on your own.
Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, allergies and low-spice menus are planned ahead and confirmed with each restaurant the day before. We also plan around reduced mobility, avoiding steep steps and arranging accessible vehicles where needed.
Do you organize layover and stopover tours too?
Yes. Under China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy, many nationalities can leave the airport between flights. Send us your flight numbers and we'll design a half-day, one-day or two-day custom tour that fits between them, with a written guarantee we return you to the airport in time.

What to put in your email

Copy this into your message and fill in what you know. Missing pieces are fine — we'll ask the right questions.

  1. Travel dates — or just the month or season you're thinking about.
  2. How many days and how many nights you have in China.
  3. Who's coming — number of travelers, and ages of any children.
  4. Arrival city — or tell us "wherever is cheapest to fly into" and we'll advise.
  5. Three things you don't want to miss.
  6. Rough budget per person, excluding international flights.
  7. Anything we should plan around — mobility, dietary needs, a birthday, a fear of heights.
Your first itinerary and all revisions are free. You pay nothing until you approve the plan. We never sell or share your details.
