The roof of the world. Private guiding, your own vehicle, and an itinerary built around how long you actually have.
Lhasa sits at 3,650 metres on the Tibetan plateau, and it is unlike anywhere else in China. The Potala Palace rises 13 storeys above the city; the Jokhang Temple is the holiest site in Tibetan Buddhism; and the Barkhor, the pilgrim circuit around it, is a constant flow of people, prayer wheels and prostration.
Visiting as a foreign passport holder requires a Tibet Travel Permit, which must be arranged before you arrive in China — we handle the whole process. Altitude is the other consideration, and we plan the first day deliberately empty, with oxygen in the vehicle.
Three nights minimum to acclimatise properly — the first day is deliberately light. Four nights lets you add Nam-tso lake or a slower rhythm.
