Why go

Guilin & Yangshuo

The karst peaks around Guilin are the landscape on the back of the ¥20 note and the reason Chinese landscape painting looks the way it does. The Li River runs through them from Guilin to Yangshuo, and the four-hour boat journey is one of the great river trips in the world.

Yangshuo itself is the place to stay — a small town of rice paddies, limestone towers and river bends, where the evenings are slow and the mornings are misty. Base yourself there rather than Guilin and the whole region changes character.

Don't miss

  • The Li River by boat from Guilin to Yangshuo
  • A bamboo raft on the Yulong River at dawn, before the crowds
  • Cycling the paddy fields and villages around Yangshuo
  • Sunrise from Xianggong Hill over the karst
  • The Longji rice terraces and a minority village homestay
  • A cooking class or a calligraphy lesson in a Yangshuo courtyard

How long do you need?

Three nights: one in Guilin or on the river, two in Yangshuo. Four lets you add the Longji terraces, which are two hours away and worth the trip.
