China destinations,
and how long each needs

Twelve places we build trips around, with an honest answer on how many days each one deserves.

Where we take travelers

China destinations, and how long each one deserves

China is roughly the size of the United States, with five time zones' worth of landscape and 3,000 years of recorded history. The hardest part of planning is not choosing what to see — it's accepting how few places fit comfortably into two weeks.

Below are the twelve destinations we build trips around most often, with an honest answer on how long each one needs. Open any city for what to see, when to go, and which trips include it.

The four regions most first-timers travel

  • The imperial north — Beijing, Xi'an, and the Great Wall. Where most trips start.
  • The eastern coast — Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Huangshan. Gardens, tea hills, mountains and the country's most modern city.
  • The southwest — Chengdu, Zhangjiajie, Guilin, Yunnan. Pandas, karst peaks and the country's best food.
  • The far west — Dunhuang, Xinjiang and the Tibetan plateau. Desert, distance and a genuinely different China.

Airport codes are indicative — we'll advise the most convenient arrival city for your dates and route, and domestic flights and high-speed rail are booked by us. Ideal stay means "to see it properly", not "the minimum we can squeeze in".

What to put in your email

Copy this into your message and fill in what you know. Missing pieces are fine — we'll ask the right questions.

  1. Travel dates — or just the month or season you're thinking about.
  2. How many days you'd like this trip to be.
  3. Who's coming — number of travelers, and ages of any children.
  4. Arrival city — or tell us "wherever is cheapest to fly into".
  5. What to keep, what to drop, what to add.
  6. Rough budget per person, excluding international flights.
Your first itinerary and all revisions are free. You pay nothing until you approve the plan.
