Why go

Chongqing

Chongqing is the most cinematic city in China and the fastest-growing urban area on earth. Built on cliffs where two rivers meet, it stacks roads, metro lines and buildings five levels deep, and at night the whole thing glows.

It is also the home of hotpot, in its original and most punishing form, and the gateway to the Three Gorges — most Yangtze cruises depart from here, which makes Chongqing a natural two-day stop on the way to Yichang.

Don't miss

  • Hongya Cave at night — a floodlit traditional building complex on the river
  • The Yangtze River cable car across the water
  • Hotpot, at a restaurant your guide actually eats at
  • The People's Liberation Monument and Jiefangbei's neon streets
  • Ciqikou old town, and the Liziba metro station inside a building
  • Boarding a Yangtze cruise for the Three Gorges

How long do you need?

Two nights covers the city, the food and the views. Chongqing works best as the start of a Three Gorges cruise or a quick stop between Chengdu and Yichang.
