Why go

Hangzhou

Hangzhou is what Chinese people mean when they say a city is beautiful. West Lake — a 6 km² stretch of water ringed by willow trees, causeways and pagodas — has been landscaped and written about for over a thousand years, and it still delivers.

An hour from Shanghai by high-speed rail, it's the easiest add-on to any eastern itinerary. Beyond the lake there are the Longjing tea terraces, the Lingyin Temple and its carved grottoes, and a slower, greener side to China that group tours rarely reach.

Don't miss

  • West Lake by boat, then the Su and Bai causeways on foot
  • The Longjing tea terraces, with a tasting and a tea picker
  • Lingyin Temple and the Feilai Feng grottoes
  • The Grand Canal and the Qiantang River tidal bore, in season
  • Longjing Village's tea houses and a home-cooked lunch
  • A Chinese ink-painting or silk-weaving workshop

How long do you need?

Two days: one for West Lake and the city, one for the tea hills and Lingyin. Hangzhou is an ideal 1–2 day stop between Shanghai and Huangshan.
