The Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop — 8 Days

This is the route Chinese travelers take when they want the big country: Qinghai Lake's impossible turquoise, the mirror-flat salt crust of Chaka, the painted caves of Dunhuang, the fort at Jiayuguan where the Great Wall ends, and Zhangye's striped rainbow mountains.

It's a loop, so you start and finish in Xining and never see the same road twice. The distances are real — one long driving day between Chaka and Dunhuang — which is exactly why it works better privately than on a coach. You stop where you want, for as long as you want, and your guide builds the day around the light.

Route at a glance

Day by day

Day 1–2Xining

Your introduction to the plateau

Arrive in Xining (2,200 m) and take it gently. The Ta'er Monastery at its dawn butter-lamp hour, the Dongguan Grand Mosque, and a first bowl of hand-pulled noodles. Your vehicle, oxygen and driver are with you from the airport.

Day 3Qinghai Lake

The blue that starts every photograph

Drive out to China's largest lake, stopping where the grassland runs into the water. Prayer flags, yaks and snow peaks on the far shore. Sunset from a ridge above the lake, then a night in a lakeside lodge.

Day 4Chaka Salt Lake

Walking on a mirror

Chaka's shallow salt water reflects the sky so completely that people photograph it as if they're standing in it. Best early morning or late afternoon, when the wind drops. Then the high plateau road west.

Day 5–6Dunhuang

Desert dunes and 1,000 years of painted caves

A driving day across the Qaidam Basin to Dunhuang, then two days: the Mogao Grottoes with a specialist guide, Crescent Moon Lake in the Singing Sand Dunes at sunset, and the night market's apricot juice and lamb skewers.

Day 7Jiayuguan

The end of the Great Wall

The fortress that marked the western limit of imperial China, standing alone in the desert. Then the Wei-Jin tomb murals, and a high-speed rail hop to Zhangye.

Day 8Zhangye

Rainbow mountains, and back to Xining

The Danxia landform at Zhangye — striped hills in rust, ochre and grey, best in late-afternoon light. Then the high-speed train back to Xining for your onward flight.

Best time to travel: May–October. June to September is warmest; late September gives the clearest light on the plateau.

Questions about this route

How long are the driving days?
One day is genuinely long — Chaka to Dunhuang, around six and a half hours, broken with stops. Everything else is two to three hours. Your car is private, so you set the breaks.
Is altitude an issue?
Xining sits at 2,200 m and Qinghai Lake at 3,200 m. Most travelers are fine; we keep oxygen in the vehicle, keep the first day light, and adjust the route if anyone feels it.
Can this be shortened?
Yes — a 5-day version flies Xining to Dunhuang and drops Zhangye. Tell us your dates and we'll advise honestly on what fits.
